The Electoral College
The framers of the constitution set up a system called the electoral college. This means that we do not specifically vote for the president, but for a group of people, called "electors" to vote for a specific candidate. In most states, the candidate who receives the most votes in that state receives all of the votes.
Electoral Votes
The number of electoral votes that each state gets is based on how many representatives and senators it has. Minnesota has 10 electoral votes because we have 2 senators + 8 representatives = 10 electoral votes. Larger states like California will receive more electoral votes than states like Idaho, with only 3 votes.
